Specialist Wet Belt Replacement β Sump Off, Strainer Cleared and OEM Timing Kit Fitted in Hitchin
A wet belt is only half the story.
Trust line: Every belt we fit is backed by a 12-month parts & labour warranty, handed over with photo proof of the old belt and strainer, and most cars are ready after one working day.
Why Belt-in-Oil Engines Need a Different Kind of Care
Conventional cambelts live behind a dry plastic cover. When they wear, they crack on the outside where you can see it. A wet belt lives inside the engine, constantly immersed in hot oil. Manufacturers adopted the design to cut friction, noise and emissions, and on paper it is clever engineering. In practice, the belt’s rubber compound can soften, swell and break down over time β a process accelerated by short journeys, fuel dilution of the oil, extended service intervals and oil that doesn’t meet the exact manufacturer specification.
The failure isn’t usually a sudden snap. It’s slow delamination: the fabric facing and rubber teeth begin to shed tiny flakes and strands. Those particles circulate with the oil and are drawn towards the oil pickup β a mesh strainer at the bottom of the sump that feeds the oil pump. As the mesh clogs, oil pressure drops. The engine’s bearings, camshafts and turbocharger, which rely on that pressure, begin to suffer long before the belt itself gives up.
That’s why we describe wet belt replacement as a two-part operation: replace the drive, and treat the contamination.
What Our Wet Belt Procedure Includes
Every vehicle booked for wet belt replacement at 1A Stevenage Road, Little Wymondley follows a documented procedure. The details vary by engine, but the principles never change.
Green, Amber, Red β How Urgent Is Your Belt?
| Triage | Typical belt-related signs | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| π’ Green | Car near its recommended belt interval, servicing on time, no lights or noises. | Plan a preventative replacement. Drive in at a time that suits you. |
| π‘ Amber | An advisory note on belt condition, a PureTech belt-width reading close to its limit, an intermittent oil pressure message, or unknown service history. | Book a Health Check first so we can measure, inspect and advise before you commit. |
| π΄ Red | Solid red oil pressure light, “stop vehicle” message, sudden loss of brake assistance, or the engine stopping and refusing to restart. | Do not drive. Arrange recovery to our bays β see /vehicle-recovery-collection/. |
Preventative Replacement: Cheaper Than the Alternative
The cost of replacing a wet belt is predictable. The cost of not replacing one is not. A preventative job typically involves one day in the workshop and a known parts list. A belt that has already starved the engine of oil can mean a turbocharger, crankshaft bearings, camshafts or β if the belt snaps on an interference engine β bent valves and a cylinder head rebuild (/engine-repairs-rebuilds/).
Manufacturer intervals for wet belts have been revised several times as real-world data has emerged. Rather than rely on a number printed years ago, we check the current schedule for your exact engine and model year. As a rule of thumb, if your car is six years old or past 70,000 miles, have the belt checked rather than waiting for the oil light.
Guide prices for each engine are on our Pricing & Cost Guide (/pricing-cost-guide/).

Wet Belt Replacement FAQs
How long does a wet belt replacement take?
On most engines it’s a full working day because the sump has to come off and sealant needs time to cure before oil goes back in. A handful of larger commercial vans need two working days, which we confirm at the quote stage.
Do you always remove the sump?
Yes, on every wet belt replacement. Without it, there’s no way to see or clear the rubber debris sitting in the pickup strainer β and that debris is the main cause of oil starvation after a belt change.
Can I keep driving if my belt is due but the car feels fine?
A Green-triage car with no symptoms can usually be driven in normally for its booking. The risk rises the further past the interval you go, so we recommend booking rather than waiting for a warning light.
What oil will you put back in?
Oil specification matters enormously with wet belts. We use oil that meets the manufacturer’s approval for your specific engine, and we’ll note the specification on your invoice so future services can match it.
Will I get to see the old parts?
Yes. We photograph the removed belt, the strainer before and after cleaning, and the inside of the sump, and you’re welcome to take the old parts home.
Is a wet belt the same as a cambelt?
Both are toothed timing belts, but a traditional cambelt runs dry outside the engine, whereas a wet belt runs inside it, immersed in oil. That difference changes how it wears and why the replacement procedure is more involved.
