Snapped Wet Belt & Timing Chain Engine Rebuilds — Cylinder Heads, Valves and Complete Engine Replacements
When a timing drive fails outright, the engine needs more than a new belt — it needs a surgeon who will open it up, assess every injury honestly, and tell you whether repair, rebuild or replacement makes the most.
Trust line: Damage is photographed at every stage, the repair price is fixed before work starts, and 0% finance can spread the cost of larger rebuilds over monthly payments.
What Happens Inside an Engine When the Timing Drive Lets Go
Most modern petrol and diesel engines are “interference” designs. At certain points in each rotation, the open valves occupy space that the piston will move into a moment later. The timing belt or chain is the only thing preventing them from meeting. If that drive snaps or jumps several teeth, the crankshaft keeps turning under momentum while the camshafts stop or slip, and pistons strike open valves.
The result can range from slightly bent valves to broken valve guides, cracked pistons, damaged camshafts or a holed cylinder head. On a wet belt engine, there’s often a second injury too: the oil starvation that led up to the failure may have already worn the turbocharger and crankshaft bearings.
Oil starvation without a snapped belt is its own category of damage. A badly blocked pickup strainer can cause bearing knock, turbo failure or seized camshafts even when the timing drive is still intact.
Red Triage Only: Don’t Turn the Key
| Signs that an engine may have suffered timing failure | Why recovery matters |
|---|---|
| Engine stopped suddenly while driving and now cranks unusually fast or with no compression | A snapped belt or chain lets the starter spin the engine freely — and each attempt can cause further valve contact. |
| Loud clattering or a single heavy bang, followed by loss of power | The drive may have jumped and valves may be striking pistons. |
| Red oil pressure light followed by knocking | Bearings may already be damaged; running the engine worsens it rapidly. |
| Turbo shriek, heavy smoke or oil in the intercooler pipes after a low-pressure warning | Turbo damage can shed metal into the oil system. |
If any of these apply, the vehicle belongs on a low-loader, not on the road. We’ll collect it from anywhere within roughly 30 miles of our workshop at 1A Stevenage Road, Little Wymondley, Hitchin, SG4 7HT — across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, West Essex and North London.
Our Assessment Process — Before Any Big Decision
A rebuild is a significant investment, so we don’t quote one until we’ve gathered evidence.
Compression and leak-down testing tell us whether valves are sealing on each cylinder. A leak-down test pinpoints whether pressure escapes past bent valves, worn rings or a damaged head gasket.
Borescope examination through the spark plug or injector holes lets us see piston crowns and valve faces without dismantling the engine.
Oil and filter analysis reveals whether bearing material, turbo debris or belt residue has circulated.
Timing cover and head inspection confirm whether the drive has jumped and how far.
You’ll receive photographs and a clear explanation of what we found, alongside costed options.
The Treatment Options
Why Root Cause Matters on a Rebuild
A rebuilt engine fitted to a car that still has a contaminated oil cooler, turbo feed pipe or sump will fail again. That’s why our rebuilds treat the entire lubrication circuit, not just the parts that broke: turbo oil feed lines are checked or replaced, oil coolers are flushed or renewed, and the pickup strainer is new or verified clean. On wet belt engines, the replacement timing drive is fitted to the latest manufacturer specification.
Guide Costs
Rebuild prices vary more than any other job we do, because they depend on what we find inside.
| Treatment | What’s typically involved | Guide price |
|---|---|---|
| Cylinder head repair after belt or chain failure | Head off, valves/guides, machining, new timing kit, gaskets, oil | Fixed Price by Reg & VIN Check (0% Finance Available) |
| Bottom-end repair after oil starvation | Bearings, oil pump, strainer, gallery cleaning | Fixed Price by Reg & VIN Check (0% Finance Available) |
| Full engine rebuild | Strip, measure, machine, rebuild, refit | Fixed Price by Reg & VIN Check (0% Finance Available) |
| Replacement engine supply and fit | Unit, new timing kit, ancillaries transferred | Fixed Price by Reg & VIN Check (0% Finance Available) |
| Damage assessment (compression, leak-down, borescope) | Pre-quote investigation | Assessed and quoted before any strip-down |
More context on pricing is available in our Pricing & Cost Guide (/pricing-cost-guide/). Before-and-after examples are gathered in Case Studies (/case-studies/).
Prevention Is the Better Medicine
Almost every rebuild we quote could have been avoided by a timely belt or chain replacement and a strainer clean. If your vehicle is still running normally, a Health Check (/wet-belt-diagnostics-health-check/) costs far less than any of the treatments above.
Engine Rebuild & Snapped Belt Questions
My wet belt snapped. Is the engine definitely ruined?
Not necessarily. On many engines, a snapped belt bends valves but leaves pistons and bearings serviceable, making a cylinder head repair possible. We can only confirm that after compression testing and inspection.
Is it cheaper to rebuild my engine or fit a replacement?
It depends on the extent of the damage, parts availability for your engine, and the value of the car. We price both routes where both are realistic, so you can compare like for like.
What’s the difference between engine reconditioning and a rebuild?
The terms overlap. Reconditioning usually means restoring an engine to factory tolerances with machining and new wear parts; a rebuild can range from a partial repair to a full strip-down. We’ll specify exactly what’s included in any quote.
Do you rebuild turbochargers too?
Where oil starvation has damaged a turbo, we’ll quote for replacement with a new or remanufactured unit and replace its oil feed line.
Will my insurance cover a snapped timing belt?
Mechanical failure is typically excluded from standard motor insurance, though some warranty products cover it. Check your policy wording; we can supply a written diagnosis to support a claim.
How long does a rebuild take?
Head repairs are usually measured in days, and full rebuilds or engine replacements take longer, depending on machining and parts lead times. We’ll give you a timescale with the quote.
