BMW N47 and B47: The Chain at the Back
BMW’s N47 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel, used from around 2007 until the mid-2010s, powered vast numbers of 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X1 and X3 models — including popular 116d, 118d, 320d and 520d variants. Its timing chains sit at the rear of the engine, against the gearbox, rather than at the front. Early N47 engines in particular developed a reputation for timing chain and guide wear, and in severe cases chain failure.
The B47 that replaced it, from around 2014, retained a rear-mounted layout with revised components. It is generally regarded as more durable, but high-mileage examples and engines with neglected oil changes still require chain attention.
Why rear-mounted matters: reaching the chains generally means removing the engine (or on some installations the transmission) from the car. That calls for a lift, an engine crane, a support frame and a meticulous approach to disconnecting and reconnecting everything from wiring to coolant lines.
Symptoms to note:
- A whine or rattle audible from the gearbox end of the engine, often louder when the clutch is pressed or at certain revs.
- A rattle at cold start or when lifting off the throttle.
- Camshaft/crankshaft correlation fault codes.
Mini: Prince-Era Petrol Chains
Second-generation Mini models (R55 Clubman, R56 hatch, R57 convertible and related R-series cars, roughly 2006–2014) were offered with 1.4 and 1.6 petrol engines from the BMW–PSA “Prince” family — N12, N14, N16 and N18. These engines are known for timing chain stretch and tensioner issues, especially when oil changes have been infrequent. The characteristic symptom is a “death rattle” at cold start that may grow louder over time. Mini Cooper D and Cooper SD versions with the 2.0-litre diesel used the N47, which brings its rear-chain considerations into Mini ownership too.
Later F-series Minis use newer BMW B-series engines with their own maintenance needs; we’ll check yours by registration.
Jaguar Land Rover 2.0 Ingenium
JLR’s 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel (often coded 204DTD or AJ200D) arrived from 2015 in the Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Velar, Jaguar XE, XF, E-Pace and F-Pace. Timing chain stretch has become one of the most discussed issues on these engines, and on many applications the chain is located at the rear, making repair a significant job.
Contributing factors widely discussed in the trade include oil degradation linked to diesel particulate filter regeneration cycles and extended service intervals. When stretch goes too far, the chain can jump or the engine can suffer serious internal damage.
Triage for Premium Chain Engines
| Triage | What you may notice | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| 🟢 Green | No noise, no codes; you own a model with a known chain history or are buying one used. | Book a Health Check with a cold-start assessment. |
| 🟡 Amber | Brief cold-start rattle, gearbox-end whine on a BMW diesel, occasional timing fault code, or oil changes overdue. | Book an assessment soon; avoid hard acceleration and long motorway runs. |
| 🔴 Red | Loud persistent rattle, misfire with engine warning light, sudden loss of power, or the engine stopping. | Leave it parked. Request low-loader recovery so the chain doesn’t jump. |
Our Procedure for BMW, Mini and JLR Chains
Evidence first. We read live camshaft and crankshaft correlation data and listen to the engine from completely cold. Where access allows, we inspect guides and tensioner position. On a BMW N47 or B47, we also listen specifically at the rear of the engine with diagnostic stethoscopes.
Planned removal. For rear-mounted chains we schedule the job carefully: the engine is supported and removed, labelled and stored on a stand, and all disturbed seals and gaskets are listed for renewal.
Complete, updated kits. We fit full chain kits — chains, guides, tensioners and sprockets — using the latest revised parts where BMW or JLR have issued updates. On Mini Prince engines, we also assess the VANOS camshaft adjusters and the chain tensioner design fitted. Kits are OE-spec, and we don’t fit customer-supplied parts because our 12-month parts & labour warranty covers both together.
While it’s out. With the engine on a stand, it’s often sensible to renew items that would otherwise require the same labour later, such as the rear main seal or, on manual cars, a worn clutch. We’ll recommend only what the inspection justifies, with a price before work starts.
Refit and verify. The engine is refitted, filled with the correct-specification oil and coolant, adaptations reset and timing data confirmed on a road test.

Other Chain-Driven Engines We See
We also treat chain-driven VW and Audi TSI petrols, Mercedes OM651 diesels, Vauxhall’s 1.6 CDTi “Whisper” diesel and Volvo engines, and owners of Nissan and Mazda models are welcome to ask. Many share the same principles of stretch and tensioner wear, and our general Timing Chain Replacement page (/timing-chain-replacement/) applies. Call us with your registration to check whether we can take on your specific engine.

BMW, Mini & Land Rover Chain FAQs
How much does a BMW timing chain replacement cost?
On N47 and B47 diesels, the price is driven by the labour to remove the engine to reach the rear-mounted chains. We give one VIN-checked fixed price for your model and drivetrain, and 0% finance can spread it monthly.
Does the BMW B47 have the same chain problems as the N47?
The B47 uses revised components and is generally considered more robust, but it still has rear-mounted chains that wear, especially with irregular oil changes. Assessment is the only way to know the condition of a specific engine.
What’s the Mini “death rattle”?
It’s the nickname for the cold-start chain rattle on Prince-family petrol engines in R56-era Minis. It typically indicates chain stretch or tensioner wear that should be addressed before the chain jumps.
Is the Range Rover Evoque timing chain issue serious?
Stretch on the 2.0 Ingenium diesel can lead to severe engine damage if left untreated. If you hear rattling or see timing fault codes, book an assessment promptly.
Why does a BMW chain job take longer than a Ford chain job?
Because the N47 and B47 chains sit at the back of the engine, against the gearbox. Reaching them usually means removing the engine, which adds a substantial amount of labour compared with a front-mounted design.
Do you use upgraded parts?
Where BMW, Mini or JLR have released revised chains, guides or tensioners, we fit those latest-specification components so the repair addresses the original weakness.
