Why Two Quotes for the “Same” Job Can Be Hundreds of Pounds Apart
When owners phone around for a wet belt price, they often hear wildly different numbers. That’s rarely because one garage is greedy and another generous. It’s usually because they’re quoting for different jobs.
A low quote frequently covers the belt alone, changed from the top of the engine without removing the sump. It looks attractive — but it leaves behind the rubber debris already circulating in the oil, and it’s that debris which blocks the oil pickup strainer and starves the engine. A higher quote may include sump removal, strainer cleaning or replacement, the oil pump belt where fitted, new single-use bolts, sealant, and fresh oil of the correct specification.
Our packages are always the complete version. We would rather explain a higher number than fit a cheaper kit that leaves the real risk in place.
What Drives the Cost of a Wet Belt Replacement
- Engine access. Transverse three-cylinder engines in small hatchbacks are tightly packaged; vans and pickups bring their own access challenges.
- Sump removal complexity. Some sumps come off easily; others require subframe, exhaust or driveshaft work first.
- Number of belts. The Ford 1.0 EcoBoost has both a timing belt and a separate oil pump belt in oil.
- Parts specification. Genuine and OE-supplier kits cost more than budget alternatives.
- Strainer condition. A clean strainer can be reused; a damaged or heavily packed one should be replaced.
- Oil capacity and specification. Approved oils for wet belt engines carry a specific approval code and cost more than generic oil.
What Drives the Cost of a Timing Chain Replacement
- Chain position. Front-mounted chains are accessed behind a timing cover. Rear-mounted designs, such as BMW’s N47 and B47, usually require removing the engine or gearbox.
- Chain count and components. Twin-cam and diesel engines may use upper and lower chains, multiple guides and a high-pressure pump drive.
- Variable valve timing. Cam phasers that have been compensating for a stretched chain may also need replacement.
- Associated parts. Water pumps, seals and gaskets disturbed during the job are often best replaced at the same time.

Triage and the True Cost of Waiting
Where your vehicle sits on our scale makes a large difference to the final bill. A Green vehicle — due for replacement, symptom-free — needs only the planned package. An Amber vehicle may need the package plus a replacement strainer or oil pump belt if debris is already present. A Red vehicle recovered with an oil pressure warning may need all of that plus turbo, bearing or cylinder head work. The single best way to keep costs down is to book while you’re still Green.
Price Promise and Payment
- Your VIN-checked fixed price covers the OE-spec kit, tensioners, guides and seals, the sump-off strainer clean, the exact manufacturer-spec oil and filter, and the labour — with no hidden extras.

- Every replacement carries a 12-month parts & labour warranty.
Cost Questions Drivers Ask Us
How much is a wet belt replacement?
It depends on the engine, how difficult the sump is to remove and whether an oil pump belt is fitted. The table above shows our package for each engine; give us your registration for an exact fixed quote.
How much does it cost to replace a timing chain?
A front-mounted chain on a small petrol engine is at the lower end; rear-mounted diesel chains that require engine removal are at the higher end. We’ll confirm which applies before quoting.
Why is your price higher than a quote I got elsewhere?
Compare what’s included. If the other quote doesn’t remove the sump and clean or replace the oil pickup strainer, it isn’t the same job, and the remaining debris is a common cause of post-replacement failure.
Are your prices fixed?
Our packages are fixed for the work described. If we find something unexpected, such as a damaged oil pump, we stop and contact you before doing anything extra. The price doesn’t move unless we’ve called you first.
Is it worth replacing a wet belt on an older, high-mileage car?
Usually, yes: the package typically costs a fraction of a replacement engine. If the car’s value is very low, we’ll discuss that honestly with you.
Do you charge to collect a car that can’t be driven?
Collection is available anywhere within roughly 30 miles of Little Wymondley, and the charge will be confirmed when you book so there are no surprises. Yes, there is an additional charge, and we quote it upfront alongside the repair.
